The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992
Concerning the minimum Health and Safety requirements for the workplace. These Regulations were fully implemented on the 1st of January 1996.
MAIN PROVISIONS
Applies to most Fixed, Permanent Workplaces.
Excludes :-
- Transport.
- Temporary/mobile worksites.
- Extractive industries.
- Fishing boats.
- Agricultural or forestry land away from buildings.
- Construction sites.
The Employee is required to :-
- Maintain escape routes and emergency exits.
- Maintain clean workplaces.
- Draw attention of the employer to faulty or unsuitable equipment and machinery.
The Employer is required to :-
- Maintain escape routes and emergency exits.
- Maintain clean workplaces.
- Carry out maintenance and rectify faults as soon as possible.
- Regularly maintain and check safety equipment.
Other requirements include :-
- Suitable and sufficient lighting, ventilation and temperature.
- Cleanliness of furniture, furnishings and fittings.
- Doors and gates fulfilling safety standards.
- The safe function of escalators and travelators.
- Organisation of safe traffic routes for pedestrians and vehicles.
- Suitable and sufficient sanitary conveniences.
- An adequate supply of drinking water to be readily accessible.
- Accommodation for special clothing which is worn by any person at work but which is not taken home.
- The availability of first aid equipment in all places when working conditions require it. This equipment must be suitably marked.
- Suitable and sufficient welfare facilities.
