Reservoir signage
built to survive.

UK reservoir signage — public safety boundaries, visitor wayfinding, treatment works hazards, and operational identification. Severn Trent, Thames Water, Anglian Water customers.

Reservoirs combine three signage problems in one site: a working water-supply asset (operational hazards, lone worker safety, asset identification); a public-facing visitor destination (wayfinding, accessibility, safety boundaries); and a regulated environment (BS EN ISO 7010, WIS 4-44-01, Equality Act, Reservoirs Act 1975). Direct Signs has supplied UK water companies for over 20 years and understands the spec.

Public safety boundary signs

"No swimming", "deep water", "danger of drowning", "no fishing without permit". Manufactured in aluminium composite for 7-10 year outdoor life.

Visitor wayfinding monoliths

Major entry totems with site map, key destinations, accessibility info, and emergency contact. Powder-coated steel for 15+ year life.

Treatment works hazard signage

Chemical hazard, confined space, electrical, slip-trip-fall warnings. BS EN ISO 7010 with bespoke wording for operator-specific procedures.

Operational area identification

Pumping stations, valve houses, sluice gates, weir crossings. Engraved aluminium plates for permanent identification with asset reference.

Pipe and valve labelling

BS 1710-compliant pipe ID, valve tags with operator asset reference, QR code-enabled asset labels for management system integration.

Accessibility and tactile

Equality Act / BS 8300 compliant accessible signage at visitor centres. Tactile and braille for key destinations.

Standards we supply to

  • BS EN ISO 7010 — workplace safety signs (statutory)
  • WIS 4-44-01 — water industry signage specification
  • BS 1710 — pipe identification by content
  • BS 8300 / Equality Act 2010 — accessible signage

Featured project

Severn Trent commissioned Direct Signs for a 240-sign refresh of Carsington Reservoir — visitor centre wayfinding, 8-mile perimeter signage, BS EN ISO 7010 safety, and tactile/braille accessibility. 6 weeks from survey to handover. Followed by Draycote Water in the same approach.

Reservoir signage FAQs

What signs are required at UK reservoirs?

A typical UK working reservoir needs five categories: (1) public safety boundary signs ("no swimming", "deep water", "danger of drowning"), (2) BS EN ISO 7010 statutory safety signage at operational areas, (3) prohibition signs at restricted access (treatment works, valve houses, tunnels), (4) wayfinding for permitted visitor routes, (5) emergency contact and asset reference signage.

What is WIS 4-44-01?

WIS 4-44-01 is the Water Industry Specification for water-industry signage in the UK. It covers visual design (colours, typography), durability (substrate, lifespan), and consistency across the water network. Most UK water companies (Severn Trent, Thames Water, Anglian Water, Yorkshire Water, etc.) align their site signage to WIS 4-44-01. We supply to this specification.

How long should reservoir signage last?

Reservoir signage is high-exposure: UV, rain, frost, occasional submersion at water-margin locations. Specifications: aluminium composite (Dibond) substrate with screen-printed graphics gives 7-10 years; powder-coated steel monoliths give 15+ years; vinyl-on-rigid-PVC indoor signage gives 5-7 years. Direct Signs supplies all reservoir signage with documented expected lifespan and BS EN ISO 7010 traceability.

Do reservoirs need accessible signage?

Yes — under the Equality Act 2010 and BS 8300. Visitor centres, accessible parking, accessible toilets, and key destination signs at visitor reservoirs (Carsington, Rutland Water, Draycote, Pitsford, etc.) need tactile/braille versions. Wayfinding signage should consider mobility, visual, and cognitive accessibility.

What about pipe and valve identification?

Pipe and valve identification is governed by BS 1710 (identification of the contents of pipelines) and operator-specific schemes. We supply engraved aluminium and Traffolyte valve tags, printed pipe ID stickers, and bespoke asset labels with QR codes for operator asset-management systems.

Can you supply for the AMP cycle framework?

Yes — Direct Signs is on the supplier panels of multiple UK water companies and ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 certified by BSI. We supply to AMP cycle (Asset Management Plan) frameworks with full traceability and audit-ready documentation. Tender documentation pack supplied on request.

Reservoir signage refresh?

Site survey, system design, manufacture, and install. WIS 4-44-01 specification. ISO 9001 / ISO 14001 certified UK manufacturer.
