RESUSCITATION TREATMENT

STOP. KEEP CALM. ASSESS THE SITUATION

WARNING
CASUALTY WITHIN 20 METRES OF A HIGH VOLTAGE SOURCE (E.G. POWER LINES ETC)
DO NOT IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ATTEMPT A RESCUE OR APPROACH CLOSER THAN
20 METRES UNTIL YOU ARE POSITIVELY SURE THE POWER IS ISOLATED AND CUT OFF.

DO NOT TOUCH THE CASUALTY OR ANY EQUIPMENT THAT MAY BE IN CONTACT.
(CHECK YOUR OWN SAFETY FIRST)

ENSURE AN AMBULANCE IS CALLED IMMEDIATELY
1. IF SAFE TO DO SO, SWITCH OFF ELECTRICITY. (by pulling out plug or switching off mains supply)
DO NOT WASTE TIME SEARCHING FOR A SWITCH IF NOT EASILY AVAILABLE.

2. Remove casualty from contact with electricity by standing on a dry NON-CONDUCTIVE material
(Rubber mat or dry wood). Wear rubber gloves if available and using a wooden broom handle,
or length of dry rope remove the casualty from contact with electrical supply.

CASUALTY ISOLATED
1. Check if conscious Gently shake casualty and shout "Wake up" to gain a response
2. IF NO RESPONSE: Lay casualty on their back. Lift the jaw and tilt the head to open
mouth and airway. Carefully check mouth for blockages & debris (avoid putting
your fingers in mouth if possible). - SEE DIAGRAM A.
3. Check breathing: Does casualties chest rise & fall?. Can you hear breathing?.
Feel for breath by placing the cheek of your face near casualties mouth.
4. CHECK THE PULSE: Gently press two fingers on the Cartoid artery at side of voice box
for 10-15 seconds.- SEE DIAGRAM B.

BREATHING & PULSE PRESENT

1. Check for any other injuries & treat accordingly.
2. Place casualty in recovery position
(SEE DIAGRAM C) The head should be tilted
back with mouth open to keep airway clear.
Less than half of the casualties chest should
be touching the floor. Check that casualty
cannot roll forwards or backwards. Casualties
breathing and pulse should be regularly
monitored.

NOT BREATHING BUT HAS A PULSE

ENSURE AN AMBULANCE IS CALLED

1. With airway open pinch casualties nose shut.
- SEE DIAGRAM D.
2. Take a breath and place your mouth over tyhe
casualties mouth sealing your lips around
casualties lips.
3. Breath into the casualties mouth and watch for
the chest rising. Allow 2 seconds for each
inflation, at about 10 breaths a minute, checkng
the pulse every 10 breaths until casualty is capable of breathing unaided.
4. Once you are sure the casualty is successfully breathing unaided place the casualty in the
recovery position. Closely monitor the
breathing and pulse until the emergency
services arrive (Ambulance Service).

NOT BREATHING, NO PULSE

ENSURE AN AMBULANCE IS CALLED

1. Immediately give 2 or 3 breaths mouth to mouth.
2. Where rib-cage meetsd the breast bone place
the heel of your hand on the breast bone two finger widths (50mm/2 inches) up from the
bottom. Place your other hand on top and
interlock the fingers.- SEE DIAGRAM E.
3. Straighten your arms and rock forwards pressing the breast bone down about 50mm(2 inches)
using the weight of your body to achieve this.
(THIS NEEDS TO BE REPEATED AT A RATE OF
80-100 COMPRESSIONS A MINUTE).
4. Every 15 compressions give 2 mouth to mouth breaths. Check the pulse every 10 breaths. Keep
this sequence up until help arrives (Ambulance Service).
5. Should casualty start breathing unaided, the
pulse beat resumes and casualties colour
improves. Place in recovery position & closely
monitor until emergency services arrive.
