UK PPE signs: a buyer's guide

PPE signs are blue circles with white pictograms — the standard BS EN ISO 7010 mandatory format. They tell people what PPE must be worn in a specific area. Construction sites, factory floors, warehouses, food processing plants, healthcare clinical areas, and laboratories all use them widely.

The standard PPE pictograms

  • Hard hat / safety helmet — required on construction sites and in industrial entrances
  • Hi-vis clothing — required wherever workers and vehicles share space
  • Safety footwear — required in factory floors, construction sites, warehouses
  • Ear protection — required where noise exceeds 80 dB action level
  • Eye protection — required where flying particles, chemicals, or radiation present risk
  • Respiratory protection — required where airborne hazards (dust, fumes, biological) present risk
  • Gloves — required where skin contact with hazards or sharp materials is foreseeable
  • Face shield — required where full-face protection is needed
  • Safety harness — required for working at height

Combined PPE signs

For entries to construction sites or factory zones requiring multiple PPE items, combined signs are common. We supply standard combinations (e.g. "Hard hat + hi-vis + safety footwear") plus bespoke combinations to specification.

Where to place PPE signage

At the boundary of the PPE-required zone, in the line of sight of anyone entering. For a construction site, the main gate plus secondary access points. For a hard-hat-zone within a building, at the door to that zone. Signs work best when paired with practical means of access to the PPE itself (PPE station, dispenser, or signage to where PPE can be obtained).

Common questions

PPE sign FAQs

What does a PPE sign look like?

PPE signs are mandatory signs — a solid blue circle with a white pictogram showing the required protective equipment. Hard hat, hi-vis vest, ear protection, eye protection, safety footwear, respiratory protection, and gloves all have standard BS EN ISO 7010 pictograms.

Are PPE signs a legal requirement?

Yes, where PPE is required to control risks identified in the workplace risk assessment. The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 (as amended 2022) require employers to provide PPE and to communicate where it must be worn — that includes mandatory signage at the boundaries of PPE-required zones.

Where do PPE signs go?

At the entry to any zone where the PPE is required. For a construction site, PPE signs at the main gate. For a factory hard-hat zone, at the boundary of that zone. For an ear-protection-required area, at all entry points. Signs at the action point — not just at the building entrance.

Can I get bespoke PPE signs?

Yes. Custom wording (e.g. "Hi-vis and hard hat must be worn beyond this point", "PPE required: hard hat, hi-vis, safety footwear"), branded colours, and multi-language signs available. Lead time typically 3-5 working days.

What materials work for PPE signs?

For indoor PPE signage: rigid PVC. For external PPE signs at construction sites or yards: aluminium composite. For high-impact or vehicle-yard environments: pressed aluminium.
