No smoking signs: UK legal requirements

Since the Health Act 2006 came into force, every enclosed workplace and public place in the UK must display compliant no-smoking signage at its entrances. Get the wrong size, wrong wording, or no sign at all and the responsible person is liable for a fixed penalty notice and potential prosecution. Direct Signs has supplied Health Act compliant signage since 2007.

The legal minimum

The Smoke-free (Signs) Regulations 2007 set the precise specification for entrance signs:

  • Size: minimum A5 (210mm × 148mm)
  • Pictogram: the standard international no-smoking symbol — red circle with diagonal line over a black cigarette — at least 70mm in diameter
  • Wording: "No smoking. It is against the law to smoke in these premises"
  • Location: at every entrance to the premises, visible to anyone entering

Different rules apply in Scotland (Smoking, Health and Social Care (Scotland) Act 2005), Wales (Smoke-free Premises etc. (Wales) Regulations 2007), and Northern Ireland (Smoking (Northern Ireland) Order 2006), but the core elements — entrance signage, pictogram, mandatory wording — are equivalent.

Vehicles, vaping, and supplementary signage

Smoke-free vehicles — taxis, buses, work vehicles used by more than one person, and vehicles carrying children — must display a no-smoking sign in each compartment. The minimum size is smaller than for premises (75mm × 50mm).

Vaping is not covered by the Health Act 2006, but most employers extend their no-smoking policy to e-cigarettes under workplace rules. If your policy includes vaping, your signage should explicitly say so — Direct Signs supplies combined "No smoking, no vaping" signs as both stock and bespoke products.

Choosing materials

Most no-smoking signs are interior — affixed to glass doors, painted walls, or internal entrances. Self-adhesive vinyl is the lowest-cost choice and works for all smooth indoor surfaces. Rigid PVC (Foamex) is mountable with screws or VHB tape and is the standard for general-purpose signage indoors and in sheltered porches. For exterior gates, hoardings, and outdoor smoking-area boundaries, aluminium composite gives weather-resistant durability.

Common questions

No smoking sign FAQs

Are no smoking signs a legal requirement in the UK?

Yes. Under the Health Act 2006 (which took effect in 2007 in England, with equivalent legislation in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland), all enclosed and substantially enclosed UK workplaces and public places must display compliant no-smoking signage at every entrance. The signs must be at least A5 size (210mm × 148mm), include the international no-smoking symbol with a minimum 70mm diameter, and use the wording "No smoking. It is against the law to smoke in these premises".

What size does a no smoking sign need to be?

For the entrance of any enclosed UK workplace or public place, the legal minimum is A5 (210mm × 148mm). The international no-smoking symbol on the sign must be at least 70mm in diameter. Signs displayed inside the premises (away from entrances) and on smoke-free vehicles can be smaller, but the entrance sign is the legally specified minimum size.

Do no smoking signs cover vaping and e-cigarettes?

The Health Act 2006 specifically covers tobacco smoking, not vaping. However, employers can — and most do — extend their no-smoking policy to include e-cigarettes and vaping under their own workplace rules. Signs that explicitly include "No vaping" or "No e-cigarettes" are recommended where the policy applies, and Direct Signs supplies combined no-smoking-and-vaping signs as both stock and bespoke products.

Where do I need to display no smoking signs?

At every entrance to a smoke-free workplace or public place. Inside the premises, additional signs are not legally required but are good practice in lifts, stairwells, and large open areas. Smoke-free vehicles (taxis, buses, work vehicles used by more than one person) require a no-smoking sign on each compartment. Signs are also typically displayed at the entrance to designated outdoor smoking areas to indicate where smoking is permitted vs prohibited.

What colour is a no smoking sign?

A standard UK no smoking sign is a red circle with a horizontal red diagonal line over a black silhouette of a lit cigarette, all on a white background. The text "No smoking. It is against the law to smoke in these premises" is in black. The red circle and bar form the universal prohibition symbol under BS EN ISO 7010.

Do no smoking signs need to be illuminated?

No. Unlike fire exit signs, no smoking signs do not need to be illuminated or photoluminescent. They must simply be visible at the entrance. Direct Signs supplies no smoking signs in self-adhesive vinyl, rigid PVC, and aluminium — all unilluminated.

Can I get bespoke no smoking signs with my logo or wording?

Yes. Bespoke wording (e.g. company name, additional restrictions like "No vaping", or supplementary information like "Smoking permitted in designated area only") can be added without losing Health Act compliance, provided the legally required core elements (the standard pictogram, the legal-text wording, and the size minimum) are preserved. Branded colours can be used as a background. Lead time is typically 3-5 working days.
