No entry signs: when, where, and why

No entry signs are one of the most common signs in UK workplaces. They control access to areas where unauthorised entry creates a risk — to the visitor, to operations, or to security. Direct Signs has manufactured prohibition signage in the UK since 1980 and supplies no entry signs in vinyl, rigid PVC, aluminium composite, and aluminium across every size standard British workplaces use.

Where no entry signs are typically required

UK law doesn't list "where to put a no entry sign" by location, but several regulations effectively require them:

  • Plant rooms, electrical intake rooms, and switchgear cupboards — Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require restricted access to live electrical equipment.
  • Hazardous chemical storage — COSHH 2002 (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) requires controlled access to areas where hazardous substances are stored or used.
  • Construction sites — CDM 2015 requires the principal contractor to control site access. No entry signs at hoardings and gates form part of that.
  • One-way doors and emergency exits — fire risk assessments and BS 9999 (fire safety code of practice) often require "no entry" signs on the back of one-way fire doors.
  • Restricted security zones — server rooms, secure storage, and access-controlled areas where unauthorised entry could compromise security.

Standard versus bespoke wording

The most common stock signs are:

  • "No entry" + standard prohibition pictogram — the universal red-circle-with-bar
  • "Authorised personnel only" — text-led prohibition for restricted access areas
  • "Staff only" — public/staff boundary control
  • "Do not enter" — direct prohibition wording, often paired with a reason ("Plant room", "Live electricity")
  • "No public access" — common in service corridors of hospitals, hotels, schools
  • "Fire exit, no entry" — for the back of fire exit doors that are one-way

Bespoke wording — naming the specific reason, person to contact, or restriction — is often more useful than a generic sign. A "Plant room — contact facilities on ext 4500" is more actionable than "No entry". Direct Signs manufactures custom wording on the same materials with a typical 3-5 working day lead time.

Materials by environment

Choose based on where the sign is going:

  • Self-adhesive vinyl — interior smooth surfaces (doors, painted walls, glass). Lowest cost.
  • Rigid PVC (Foamex) — general-purpose, indoor and sheltered outdoor. Mountable with screws or VHB tape.
  • Aluminium composite — exterior, weather-resistant, long-life. Standard for outdoor gates and hoardings.
  • Aluminium — high-impact, industrial environments, vehicle yards.

Common questions

No entry sign FAQs

What is a no entry sign?

A no entry sign is a prohibition sign that forbids access to an area, room, or route. Under BS EN ISO 7010, the standard no entry sign is a red circle with a horizontal white bar on a white background — the universal prohibition pattern. Variants include "do not enter", "authorised personnel only", "no access", and "no public access". They are commonly used at restricted area boundaries, plant rooms, electrical intake rooms, hazardous zones, and one-way doors.

Are no entry signs a legal requirement?

No entry signs are not always required by name, but UK regulations require employers to control access to hazardous areas under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and sector-specific rules (CDM 2015 for construction, COSHH 2002 for chemical areas, EAWR 1989 for electrical equipment). Where access control is required, a compliant no entry / restricted access sign is the standard solution.

What colour is a no entry sign?

A standard BS EN ISO 7010 no entry sign uses red on white — a red circle (typically with a horizontal white bar through the middle, the universal prohibition mark) on a white background, with any supplementary text in black. The "no pedestrians" no entry uses a red circle with a black pedestrian pictogram and a red diagonal line. Traffic-style "no entry" road signs use the white horizontal bar inside the red circle.

What sizes are no entry signs available in?

Direct Signs supplies no entry signs in standard UK sizes: 100mm, 150mm, 200mm, 300mm, 400mm, and 600mm diameter (for circular signs) and equivalent rectangular sizes for "authorised personnel only"-style signs. The right size depends on viewing distance — as a rule, the sign's height should be at least 1/200 of the maximum viewing distance. Custom sizes are available on request.

Can I order no entry signs in bulk?

Yes. Direct Signs offers trade pricing on bulk orders of 50+ units, with discounts increasing at higher quantities. Account customers receive standing trade discounts and net payment terms. For sites needing 100+ signs to a single specification, request a quote for the most cost-effective solution.

How fast can no entry signs be dispatched?

Stock items dispatch within 1 working day on orders placed before 2pm. Standard UK mainland delivery is 1-3 working days. Custom orders (bespoke wording, non-standard sizes, branded colours) typically ship in 3-5 working days from artwork approval. Same-day production is available on request for urgent replacements.

Do no entry signs need to comply with BS EN ISO 7010?

For workplace safety signage in the UK, BS EN ISO 7010 is the standard required by the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996. Every Direct Signs prohibition sign — including no entry and restricted access signs — meets BS EN ISO 7010. Bespoke wording can be added without losing compliance, provided the standard pictogram and colour scheme are preserved.
