Custom signage

Wayfinding Signs
UK manufactured.

Directional and informational signage for hospitals, schools, business parks, public buildings, and complex sites. Designed as a coherent system.

Wayfinding is a system, not a sign. The goal is to get a first-time visitor from the building entrance to their destination without ever feeling lost. Effective wayfinding reduces "lost-visitor" support load on receptionists, improves accessibility, and projects a professional, well-managed environment.

Direct Signs designs and manufactures wayfinding for hospitals (ward identification, departmental directories, accessibility), schools and academies (visitor wayfinding, classroom identification, fire safety plans), business parks and corporate campuses (multi-tenant directories, building identification, internal floor plans), and public buildings (libraries, leisure centres, council offices).

Our process: site survey to map visitor journeys and decision points, system design with a coherent visual hierarchy and modular sign families, manufacture, installation, and post-occupancy review.

Common questions

Wayfinding Signs FAQs

How do you design a wayfinding system?

Site survey to map the building and visitor journeys. Identify decision points (where visitors need to choose left/right or up/down). Design a sign family with a clear visual hierarchy (totem at entrance, fingerpost at decision points, door identification at destinations). Manufacture and install. Post-occupancy walk-through to identify remaining gaps.

Do wayfinding signs need to be tactile?

For public buildings under the Equality Act 2010, tactile signage is generally required for key destinations (toilets, lifts, fire exits). BS 8300 is the practical design code. We supply tactile and braille versions of standard wayfinding signs.

Can you handle whole-site refreshes?

Yes. Hospital trusts, school estates, and large business parks use our project-managed service for whole-site signage refreshes. Survey, design, manufacture, install, hand over.
