The challenge
Active quarry sites are some of the most regulated UK workplaces. Aggrecom's signage at their Ilkeston site had grown organically over years and needed restandardising to current Mines and Quarries Acts and Quarries Regulations 1999 requirements. A site safety audit identified specific gaps: missing PPE mandatory signs at certain entry points, faded vehicle hazard warnings, and inconsistent perimeter signage.
What we did
Site survey to map all hazards and required signage. Full site safety board redesign with multi-message format. BS EN ISO 7010 mandatory PPE signs (hard hat, hi-vis, ear protection, eye protection, safety footwear) at all relevant entry points. Vehicle hazard signage upgraded to high-reflective specification. Perimeter signage consolidated and consistently styled.
Aggrecom operates an active aggregates quarry in Ilkeston supplying construction materials to East Midlands sites. The signage refresh was triggered by an internal safety audit that flagged specific gaps in the site's compliance with the Quarries Regulations 1999 and current HSE guidance.
The brief
Three priorities. Multi-message site safety boards at the main entry points combining mandatory PPE, "authorised personnel only", deep excavation warnings, and vehicle traffic management on single boards. BS EN ISO 7010 mandatory signs at all PPE-required zones (hard hat, hi-vis, ear protection, eye protection, safety footwear). Vehicle hazard upgrades with high-reflective specification suitable for night-shift visibility.
What we delivered
95 signs covering the full site. Two large multi-message site safety boards at the main entry and the secondary plant access. 30 BS EN ISO 7010 mandatory PPE signs across changing rooms, plant access points, and processing areas. 25 vehicle hazard signs with reflective treatment for night visibility. 18 perimeter and "authorised personnel only" signs in standardised format. Plus replacement bespoke signage for crusher operating areas and lockout-tagout stations.
All in aluminium composite for the long external life expected on quarry sites. Lead time was 3 weeks from survey to install.
The HSE outcome
The HSE inspector who visited the site for routine inspection 4 months after the refresh recorded zero findings on signage. Aggrecom's safety officer flagged this as a meaningful change from previous inspections where signage had typically been a cluster of minor findings.
"Aggregates sites have specific signage requirements that not all suppliers understand. Direct Signs got it right first time, and the HSE inspection passed cleanly on signage."
