What's new in BS EN ISO 7010:2020+A1:2024
The latest BS EN ISO 7010 update added new pictograms and revised existing ones. Here's what changed and what to specify.

BS EN ISO 7010 is updated periodically as new workplace situations arise and existing pictograms are refined. The most recent significant update was BS EN ISO 7010:2020+A1:2024.
New pictograms added
- E024 AED / defibrillator — green safe-condition rectangle with heart-and-lightning-bolt pictogram. Becoming standard in UK public-access AED installations.
- Drone-related signage — both warning ("drones in use") and prohibition ("no drones") pictograms reflecting growing UAV usage
- Cyber and information security — limited additions for restricted-access information areas
- Updated photoluminescent technical references — alignment with current DIN 67510 grading
Pictograms revised
Several existing pictograms received minor refinements for clarity. The "running man" fire exit pictogram (E001) has remained stable since the 2003 standard, which is part of why it's now globally recognised. Most revisions are small typography or stroke-weight adjustments rather than fundamental redesigns.
What this means for specifiers
- Reference "BS EN ISO 7010:2020+A1:2024" rather than older versions in your tender documents
- For AEDs, use E024 — the new dedicated pictogram replaces ad-hoc heart-symbol signage
- Existing pre-2024 BS EN ISO 7010 signs do not need wholesale replacement — they remain compliant
- Where pictograms have been refined, replacement on natural lifecycle is the practical approach
Older versions still valid
Workplaces with BS EN ISO 7010:2020 (the previous version) signage in good condition do not need to replace it. The "+A1:2024" amendment is additive — it adds pictograms rather than invalidating existing ones.
What about BS 5499-1?
The pre-2013 UK standard. Workplaces still operating signage from before 2013 should plan replacement at end-of-life with BS EN ISO 7010 — particularly fire exit signage where the pictograms differ. See our BS EN ISO 7010 explained guide for the full background.
